Customer Reviews
Since I purchased an ILuv 1MM747 Speaker Stand a couple months before the Logitech, I will compare the features and benefits of both. The Logitech is compact and easy to set-up. It works well with my iPad 2 - charging while off or on. It is a reasonably good looking stand and has a small footprint. With both the Logitech and the ILuv it can be a bit difficult to mount the iPad - it takes some practice as you worry about damaging the iPad - and neither offered an advantage over the other. I would give the edge to the Logitech in it's ability to easily move the screen from vertical to horizontal. The screen mount is easier to use and more versatile than the iLuv - which does not allow to see the screen horizontally - so if you want to watch videos it is a much better choice than the ILuv. However, the ILuv has much better sound quality - a very big difference - probably because it is a much bigger unit with large speakers on the sides, versus the small built-in speakers the Logitech has on the back of the stand.
So, if you are primarily going to watch video, or looking for a compact stand that is easy to move around, sounds reasonably good, and allows you to move the screen easily, I would buy the Logitech. However, if space is not an issue, and you primarily want to use the stand to listen to music, or sound quality is an issue, I would opt for the ILuv, as it offers suprisingly good sound. The ILuv also sells for about $15 more. For my purposes, I use the Logitech on my desk where space is at a premium and I primarily listen to Podcasts, and I use the ILuv in the bedroom to listen to music.
This new product from Logitech has earned a permanent place on my desk. After only 3 hours after unpacking it, two other people in my office have already ordered their own. That might not sound like a big deal but that's everyone in my office with an iPad 2. The iPad1 owners are looking for something similar. (note: this is one case where I should have RTFM. There are two unobtrusive, easily removed, bands that hold the iPad 2 in place. Remove them and an iPad 1 will fit right in. Thanks to RJMacReady for pointing that out. I'm sure that Amazon will be getting a few more orders from the iPad 1 owners starting this evening, now that they know it will work for them as well.)
Even with a small footprint this stand from Logitech offers landscape and portrait modes, quick charging of your iPad2, speakers with surprisingly good sound, tilt options and a sleek design. I find this base to be far more useful for playing music than my bluetooth speaker - I currently have a Creative D80. While the D80's wireless capability allows me to wander around the room and still listen to music, the sound quality is inferior to this Logitech product AND it has a larger foot print.
Not advertised in the main product description is that this device offers a far superior viewing angle that the Apple smart-cover. By placing the iPad several inches off the table and allowing the user to adjust the tilt of the screen, glare is significantly reduced. I found today that typing with an external keyboard feels a whole lot better. Even typing on the screen of the iPad while in portrait mode seemed more comfortable and natural. Maybe I can finally get rid of that kink at the base of my neck caused by bad reading habits.
This device also greatly improves the viewing experience when watching a movie with a friend or two. The standard iPad speakers are anemic and are next to useless when watching a movie and earphone splitters are so 3 decades ago.
Finally, I found that Facetime conversations were better for a couple of reasons. First, the positioning and camera angle resulted in a more flattering picture and better lighting. Second, the amplified sound made it much easier for several of us in my office to hear what was being said the the folks on the other end of the conversation.
For these reasons and others this stand is the perfect tool to bring along on a trip. I usually travel with a speaker-dock combo as it's handy as an alarm clock and for listening to music in my hotel room. Though this dock is heavier than iPhone docks, it's still worth carrying the weight for the combination of features this stand offers.
A couple of suggestions for improvement. A battery option would be nice. What I would REALLY like is an output jack that could connect to a Pico projector. Even a standard iPhone/iPad style port would be fine as most Pico projectors come with iDevice adapters. Finally, I wouldn't mind being able to tilt the arm forward just a little bit more.
