Customer Reviews

I connected the Targus USB 3.0 docking station to my HP Pavilion dv7t system and Windows loaded the drivers onto my system. I then connected the video using the DVI connector to my Samsung Syncmaster 245BW monitor and a Cat-5 Ethernet cable to my Linksys E4200 router. Targus advertises that the USB 3.0 docking station supports monitors up to 2048 x 1150 display mode and 1 GB Ethernet. I am sorry to say that the unit does not support either of these. My monitor had much flicker and missing pixels (it was running 1920 x 1080). Setting the refresh rate at 75 MHz did not correct the flicker or missing pixels. As for the Ethernet connection, it only connects at 100Mb and not 1Gb. I contacted Targus support and they had to get back to me with an update since the USB 3.0 dock was new. The email I received stated the problem was in my hardware and that I needed to correct this in order for the device to run properly. Sadly to say, I emailed them back and stated that I have been running 1Gb Ethernet equipment for over 5 years and none of my devices that support 1Gb has ever run at 100Mb speed. For the video side, I also have a Kensington sd400v Universal Docking Station. This is a USB 2.0 device, but uses exactly the same drivers (DisplayLink) as does the Targus USB 3.0 docking station. The Kensington unit works flawlessly and displays the 1920 x 1080 resolution with no flicker or missing pixels. For those of you looking at the Targus USB 3.0 dock, I suggest you stay away until Targus fixes the hardware issues with this device. Toshiba has a USB 3.0 docking station out now, but have no experience with it. I recommend that if you need additional USB 3.0 connections just get a USB 3.0 hub and connect a Kensington sd400v Docking Station into the USB 3.0 hub. As for the 1Gb Ethernet connection, my laptop sits close enough to my 10/100/1000 Linksys switches and I just plug my laptop into a port on one of them.

Blazing fast and everything works! Just bought this and I have no relationship at all to Targus.
The Targus 3.0 Universal Docking Station saves lots of wear and tear on my Dell 15z's sparse connectors (only 2 3.0 USB ports and not equipped with any docking link). Instead of continually disconnecting an external monitor, disk drive and speakers; I keep the monitor, up to 4 usb devices and audio speakers all plugged in to the Targus 3.0 dock and make one connection to one of the 15z's superfast 3.0 usb port.
In and out, I'm connected or disconnected in a sec, with minimal footprint and minimal wires. Too bad it doesn't have some way of charging the laptop too, but that is not a standardized component and the Targus will work with ANY laptop, for that matter, with a standard USB port.
The Targus compact wedge design with attached rubber friction pads is cool and it keeps your laptop angled and cool as well. For those concerns about the DisplayLink software, there isn't any. It seamlessly found my hd samsung 24in monitor and works like a charm.
