Costumer Reviews

I just replaced a 3 year old Sangean RCR-3 which started acting up after just 3 years. The dimmer circuit started to fail causing the display brightness to constantly go from dim to bright and dim to bright forever. It was like it was possessed or something. I was spoiled by some of the features of the Sangean but after having it fail for no apparent reason I didn't want to buy another. Besides, they don't offer a model that I like which allows iPhone docking.

Ok, I got home and plugged this clock in and INSTANTLY the correct time was showing. It seems that Sony has a feature that Sangean could learn from. They use a backup battery that holds the time for up to a year in the event of a power failure. Sony preset the time at the factory too. Not only does it have a user replaceable CR2032 battery but in the event of a power failure the alarm will still go off! It will be the standard beeper alarm and not a radio preset or iPod song but at least you get an alarm, Thats very important.

Setting the alarm (2 of them) is easy. You can do it with the controls on the radio or use an iPhone/iPod app. The app is even easier but either way it's a snap. You can wake to a beeper, radio or iPod. You can set it to Every Day, Weekdays or Weekends. Now here is where the Sangean had it beat. The Sangean allowed me to set an alarm to go off Every Sunday for example or Sun and Tues or any combination you can think of. I like that flexibility but the Sony isn't bad. Oh yeah, with the Sony you can set the volume of the Alarm too. Sadly it doesn't gradually ramp up the preset volume to wake you gently but that's ok. You can program the Snooze duration up to 60 minutes if you want. The display brightness is manually adjustable to 4 levels and I find it to be very legible from most angles and from across the room. Wish it had an ambient light sensor though. Maybe I should design my own clock radio and submit it to Sony to build, LOL. If only......

The radio tuner is quite good. It pulls in stations with ease. No drifting or static. Sadly it doesn't display RDS information either but again oh well.... I find the sound quality to be quite good. For all you audiophiles out there I'm sure this radio isn't going to please you but for me I find it very good. It is no where near the sound quality of Tivoli, Bose or Polk so get that out of your head right now. What do you expect for this price point? What you do get is a good quality Stereo with excellent midrange and decent bass and treble. It has a SOUND button that allows you to switch on Mega Bass and/or Mega Expand or simply set it to normal. You cannot set the bass and treble manually like an equalizer. You only get the presets defined by Sony. These tiny speakers do not produce any harsh boomy bass. The sound to my ears is very crisp and clear, not muffled and not tinny or cheap sounding. Overall just a good quality sound for this price point.

It comes with a credit card remote that works well from across the room. What I really like is how well it integrates with my iPhone 4. I tried a Sangean radio with a dock and it would turn on the iPone music player but would not turn it off. It had software issues where the Sony just works.

I'm sure there are features that I neglected to mention but a quick glance at the Sony website to view the owners manual should answer all your questions.

Purchase went smoothly and items received in excellent condition and on time. So far I have had no negative issues with the dock. The sound and sound enhancers are nice. The piece is attractive and sits in the dining room. The alarm features work very well and in conjunction with my ipod. Note you must download the app for this to fully function. The remote that comes with it is very handy when I'm in the kitchen or living room. The settings are user friendly. This product just had a big price drop since I purchased it so I wish I waited 60 days so my recommendation is to grab a nice dock for the price just in time for the holidays.
