Costumer Reviews
I was looking for a small dock primarily to hold my iPhone on my desk at an angle where I could see the screen (and would work better than proping it up with my stapler). This was the best priced product I could find, and the included charger and cable were a bonus.
The good:
- Everything does work. I'm continuing to use my Apple cable connected between the dock and my PC. It charges from the dock and is detected on my PC when I connect it. The included charger and cable also work.
Could be better:
- The analog out in the base seems to be clipping the audio, as if the volume is too high. When I connect it to the base it won't let me control the output volume anymore, so I can't reduce it to avoid the clipping. So when I use the analog out the quality of the audio is significanly reduced. This is somewhat disappointing, but I can still hook up to the phone's headphone jack and get the expected quality (and volume control).
- The base is weighted, but I wish it was a bit heavier. When pressing on the screen sometimes it tips back a bit.
UPDATE 9/27/11:
Worked for a couple weeks, then my phone started not getting a good connection to the charger and would occasionally charge. It seemed related to the rear connector, if I pushed upwards on it then it would start charging then when I released it would stop. So I decided to take the base apart. What I discovered is that the PCB is rather poorly hand soldered, and the design is made as cheap as possible (bending connector pins together to mate with a single pad on the PCB instead of separate PCB pads). I found on mine that the connectors were actually OK, but there was a bad connection between the rear connector on PCB. So I reflowed the solder and it works fine again. The crappy rear audio output is also fixed.
So if you're having intermittent issues with your base, more than likely it's a bad solder job. There's only one resistor on the board that I believe is used to tell the iPhone that there's an external audio device connected to the bottom, the rest is just pass through from one connector to the other (so really nothing else to go wrong).
I've been using the dock for 3 months now and it's working great. The dock itself looks exactly like an Apple product, same good quality. The Travel Wall charger looks a bit rustic, but it's also good, it resembles de Magsafe. I recommend it. It's cheap and it's good. :)
