Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description
Charge, sync, and then some with this universal dock from Apple. It's a great solution for keeping a dock connected to your stereo, TV, computer, etc., and is compatible with most docking iPods/iPhones (adapters included).
Sync, Charge, and More
Sync
Connect the dock to your computer with the included USB cable and you're all set--just place your iPod or iPhone in the dock to charge the battery and sync content from iTunes. No more reaching behind the computer to plug in your device every time.
Charge
If you want a spot to charge and enjoy your music away from the computer, you can connect the dock to a standard electrical outlet using the included USB power adapter and USB cable, then place your iPod or iPhone in the dock to charge the battery.
Enjoy
Connect the dock to a stereo or speakers using a stereo audio cable to play music from your iPod or iPhone--handy for stereos that have a basic composite (RCA) connection. If you have an iPhone or iPod that plays video, you can enjoy photos or video on your TV by picking up an Apple component/composite AV cable. Entertainment on the big screen.
Control
While your iPod or iPhone is in the dock and connected to a stereo or TV, the included Apple remote lets you experience songs, slideshows, and more from across the room. Just choose a playlist, slideshow, or video, then sit back and enjoy. The Apple remote offers play/pause, volume control, and forward/back buttons for easy control.
What's in the Box
Apple universal dock, Apple remote, dock adapters (iPhone 4, iPhone 3G/3GS, iPod touch 2G/3G/4G, and iPod nano 5G), USB power adapter, USB cable, and user's guide.
The Apple Universal Dock serves as a convenient and elegant home base for charging, syncing, and more. Through the use of interchangeable inserts called Dock Adapters, it works with iPhone and all iPod models that have a dock connector and dock adapter. So even if you own more than one iPod or iPhone, you can keep just one Dock connected to your computer, stereo, or TV.

Customer Reviews

My Denon AVR-1507 - AV receiver - 7.1 channel has a dedicated iPod dock available, but upon examining it's features and limitations, I opted for the Apple solution. It can allow for component video (the lowest spec video I bother with), stereo audio, remote control, and charge my iPod. It does these basic tasks well (you'll need to pony up for the APPLE COMPONENT AV CABLE-ZML for video), and it includes loads of different adapters for any dockable iPod as well as a Apple USB Power Adapter for iPod (White), but the remote functionality is rather lacking. The remote is well built (seems like a unibody design), but its functionality is limited--you can't even navigate the menus on a Apple 30 GB iPod with Video Playback Black (5th Generation), despite a dedicated "Menu" button and four way controller. On the plus side, it wasn't hard to replicate the functionality on my Harmony. Audio and video is comparable to what you get directly via the iPod, and as always, if you care about fidelity, get the audio via the dock and not the headphone jack (note the 1/8" jack on this dock is amplified headphone jack).
Apple could get 5 stars with 3 component jacks and 2 stereo audio jacks instead of relying upon using more proprietary cables OR more remote functionality.

This is an apple product, so of course it's excellent quality. But I was expecting more flexibility with the remote. These are your options right out of the user's manual:
Play or pause a song or video,
Change the volume,
Start a song or video over or play the previous song,
Fast-forward or rewind a song or video.
The menu button will take you up through the menus, but the select button does not open menu items like it does on an iPod. The select button only plays/pauses songs or videos, and there is already a button for that. FYI the wheel on the remote is not a wheel. It only does up/down on volume and previous /next on songs or videos. It does not scroll through menu items.
So in a nutshell the remote can't switch playlists, artists, albums, genre, etc... It can't turn shuffle on or off. It all has to be done manually.
